1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 In the world of muscle cars, there are few names that get people more excited than Chevrolet Chevelle. When you add the Super Sport 396 name to that, it elevates it to true legend status. This 1967 Chevelle SS396 is a true “138 VIN” meaning that it started life as a Super Sport, and it retains its numbers matching L35 396 ci V8. Finished in Madeira Maroon over a Gold Vinyl interior, this Chevelle was restored about 10 years ago and has been driven less than 500 miles since completion. The Chevelle in 1967 was the second year of a two-year only body style, before the car underwent major changes in 1968. The clean lines were in line with the new “Coke bottle” design language that GM was implementing at the time, and 1967 received a one-year only rear end treatment with wraparound tail lights. This car presents in exceptional condition with excellent chrome-work around the car. It sits on a set of Chevrolet’s famed 14-inch Rallye wheels which are wrapped in a period-correct looking set of Firestone Wide Oval redline tires. On the inside, the Gold vinyl interior provides an excellent contrast to the dark Maroon on the outside, and the seating situation is made up of bench seats front and rear. Slide into the driver’s seat and you are met by a 3-spoke wood and brushed metal steering wheel like you would have found in a C2 Corvette, and a large horizontal speedometer spans the dash in front of you. Off to your right side is radio integrated into the metal dashboard strip, along with HVAC controls for the factory air conditioning situated below it. As with the rest of the car, the condition is remarkable, looking like it has barely been sat in since the restoration 10 years ago. What really makes this Chevelle special is what sits under the hood. A numbers matching 396ci V8, producing 325 horsepower from the factory. This example has been upgraded slightly with a more modern Edelbrock 600cfm 4bbl carburetor which does a great job of staying tuned correctly and may add a bit of power. This engine then sends power through a numbers matching TH400 automatic gearbox (with a column shifter!) to the numbers matching 12-bolt rear end. The factory dual exit exhaust gives this car a fantastic sound and power steering makes it easy to drive. Additionally, this Chevelle was optioned with power disc brakes adding safety and making the car far nicer to drive in modern traffic. Any Chevelle is a cool car - but when you factor in that this is a real SS 396, it becomes legendary.
